Kristen Nowlin didn’t even consider adopting until one afternoon when she received a phone call requesting that Nowlin take care of 5-month-old Daisy. The stay with Daisy was only meant to be temporary but when Daisy’s biological parents were unable to take care of her, they adopted her.
Two years after U.S. history teacher Bruce Nowlin and foreign language department head Kristen Nowlin married, the last thing on their minds was adopting a baby. Nowlin shares that there were many difficult things that went with adopting a child and that there were many changes and new responsibilities that they had to overcome.
“[It was hard to] all of a sudden have a kid one day that we weren’t ready for,” Mrs. Nowlin said.
According to Mrs.Nowlin, the adoption process was not very difficult for them at all. However, she does remember the large amount of paper work that was required to be filled out and many guidelines that needed to be followed. They were required to prove that they were able to take care of her.
“From our stand point, it was the greatest thing we could have done,” Mrs. Nowlin said.
They got attached to Daisy very quickly and became thrilled to get the opportunity to adopt her. According to Mrs. Nowlin they may have another child in the near future, but she points out that only one child is enough.
“She is so excited about everything [and] she’s the sweetest child I’ve ever met,” Mrs.Nowlin said. “She’s very considerate, and she’s really just a joy to be around.”
From the beginning, Daisy knew that she had been adopted, but about a year and a half ago they had a long conversation with her in which they explained what adoption meant. She was about 7 years old. She found it unique and great that she was adopted.
“She told us that she was so glad that her parents gave her to us,” Mrs. Nowlin said. “She’s just happy to be our daughter honestly. She has no issues with being adopted.”
