Junior Abraham Khan sets up his equipment for his next solo event. He waits for the crowd to appear and see the show. The time comes, the light dims, and the music starts.
When Khan started playing an instrument in sixth grade, he realized that he really enjoyed music and began making electronic music.
“I’ve always been into music,” Khan said. “I got classically trained in orchestra. I wanted to get that and turn it into something electronic.”
Khan normally works alone, rather than collaborating with others. As an amateur DJ, sometimes Khan is hired by bars or clubs.
“I have worked in groups, but [I work] just by myself usually,” Khan said. “Most of the time I throw my own events.”
Once Khan began making music, he started meeting other people who were DJs too.
“They go together, producing and DJing,” Khan said.
There are lots of procedures and equipment that Khan uses, the majority of which go into producing the music.
“There’s a lot that goes into it, but I guess when I’m performing, it’s just me and a mixer,” Khan said. “That’s pretty much all that there is to it. But, the production of the music requires a lot of different stuff.”
Khan says that he taught himself how to DJ, rather than by other means.
“With the Internet, it’s not that hard to learn how to do something, and I guess I really put my mind to it,” Khan said.
Khan prefers electronic music over most other genres of music.
“With electronic music, it’s all about the music,” Khan said. “It’s really technical and that kind of stuff so I guess it appeals to me more.”
Even though Khan’s personal music preference is electronic, he says he likes multiple types of music.
“It’s an interesting way to evoke emotion,” Khan said. “It’s something you can listen to, and it’ll make you feel a certain way, even if it doesn’t have words or anything. I find that interesting.”
Khan’s music is usually upbeat and happy. He would like to make party music and get people dancing. The musicality of a song, like the melody, is more important than vocals to Khan, and he cares more about the music than the artist singing it.
“I perform music and hopefully get a crowd going,” Khan said. “It just all depends on what I think people will like and stuff like that. I’m really into the small details of music.”
Khan says that trying to become a DJ can be daunting because of the hours of sitting and working, collecting music and practicing. Once Khan began making music, he started meeting other people who were DJs too.
“They go together, producing and DJing,” Khan said. “It’s a lot of hard work, so don’t think you can just get into it without putting an effort. It’s not glamorous.”
Khan says that most people would probably quit after a little bit, but that it’s necessary to keep on working to improve.
“When you start, you’re going to suck at it,” Khan said. “That’s just with anything.”
Khan would like to pursue DJing as a career.
“My main goal is to just be able to make a living ‘cause this is what I love, so if I can survive off of it, that would be amazing,” Khan said. “That’s my only real goal.”
Khan’s parents are supportive of him, and people think that what he does is pretty cool. He enjoys performing for people and having them enjoy what he has to offer.
“It’s a conversation starter,” Khan said. “I think I’m a pretty unique person.”
