Two teens stand in the hallway, holding hands, the typical high school relationship. Even though many teenagers have relationships in high school, three students have had a type of connection with other teens unique to the modern era. Their relationships consisted of long distance connection over the internet. These three students had different relationships, different feelings, and different endings.
Sophomore Yesica Ramirez had an online relationship for two years with a boy in California. The two video chatted on Skype from time to time and kept in constant contact.
“The relationship made me happy, but after two years I learned some things that made it a make or break relationship,” Ramirez said.
One of Ramirez’s friends came into touch with her then-boyfriend and found out he had a relationship for two years with, not Ramirez, but a totally different girl. They broke it off but keep in slight touch.
In middle school, Junior David Prestenberg had a long distance online relationship with a girl in New York over Facebook. The couple lasted two months and never had any issues with communicating. They kept in contact the entire time during the relationship and moderately Skyped. Prestenberg’s views on what people in a relationship should be able to do didn’t stop him from having one online. But Since then, Prestenberg’s feelings about long distance relationships have altered.
“It’s not something I would do again, I mean it’s cute and everything but no,” Prestenberg said. “I need to be able to see them and be with them.”
Although the relationship only lasted two months they have kept in contact and have become good friends.
Junior JuanAntonio Rodriguez had a three month relationship online with a girl in California that had added him on Facebook. There was constant contact, and Skype was also an option for better communication.
“It was a typical, teen relationship,” Rodriguez said.
At the end of the relationship the break up was mutual and the two no longer keep in contact. Rodriguez doesn’t have a solid opinion on long distance online relationships since his did not last too long, but he is witnessing one occur.
“My cousin met his current girlfriend on Xbox Live and they’ve been together for just about a year,” Rodriguez said, “Relationships like that can work.”
