Although it seems, for the most part, that the construction going on is a negative thing with the heavy lunch traffic, doors being blocked off, and fewer parking spaces, a larger school will be able to accommodate more students as well as benefit the current ones.
“I think it’s pretty cool,” sophomore Gabrielle Barajas said. “It makes me feel like we’re better than all the other schools.”
In addition to two new hallways, the science hall, library and cafeteria will all be expanded to accommodate over 400 additional students. Also, students involved in the Health Science Technology (HST) program will benefit from the HST addition, which will include four classrooms, two labs and a miniature hospital.
“If it will bring more success to the high schoolers in their medical career future, then it’s worth it,” sophomore Kassie Esparza said.
The construction will be completed by the beginning of the next school year, so incoming freshmen, as well as current freshmen, sophomores and juniors will benefit from the additions. According to the Garland ISD website, the school construction was funded by the 2002 bond election, which granted $385 million toward the district’s expanding community.
