From history teacher to published author, Jason Gray now has a book for all students and teachers everywhere to read. His AP U.S. History review book was released to be purchased on March 8.
“The students inspired me to write this book,” Gray said. “I started a few years ago, when I realized students were just forgetting things by the end of the year and that most of my students wouldn’t buy a professionally made AP review book.”
Gray published the review book through a free online publishing agency called CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform.
“I realized I could make money off of this, while helping others,” Gray said. “If my students really liked it then maybe other students would like it as well.”
After already selling a couple hundred so far, Gray is thinking of making the book a requirement for his class to buy.
“I want to use the textbook a little bit less, because there is just so much,” Gray said. “The goal of this is to summarize and make it less ‘boring.’ Students get discouraged because some just can’t hack it.”
Although he says it is hard for his book to become noticed, he is not discouraged and sees a sequel in the future.
“I’ve got more ideas to give it more of a search engine capability, and in the fall I’m thinking of coming out with a part II,” Gray said.
The book sells for $6.99 on Amazon. Gray has put two plus years of work into the making of this book, and his support has been strong.
“I thank my wife and son in the beginning of the book for putting up with the late hours,” Gray said. “The second week of my Christmas was just formatting and editing. There was so many hours put in to make it look good. I just think, how it would be if teacher in Chicago or New England or Florida picked up the book and flipped through it. Would they think this is impressive or would they think this is a piece of junk?”
