A person’s body becomes dehydrated and out of balance when they do not drink a lot of water. Dehydration takes place when the loss of body fluids is greater than the amount taken in.
Many factors can cause dehydration including fevers, heat exposure, too much exercise, vomiting, diarrhea, diseases such as diabetes, lack of access to safe drinking water and significant injuries to the skin. HST teacher Kevin Hunter says that a lack of water has huge effect on students because students’ performances degrade in a lot of areas.
“They could pass out in a game, get slow mentally, and they could become sluggish,” Hunter said.
A person should seek medical help when they experience high fevers, difficulty breathing, seizures, fainting, chest pains, headaches, and weakness in the body. If ever these situations take place, the person should be treated as soon as possible. Band director Todd Toney says that dehydration is a big issue for students because many students participate in activities that take place outside.
“[During marching season], if someone hasn’t had enough water, they have to go sit on the sideline and drink a lot before they can go back in,” Toney said. “I think that it’s one of the most common and probably least thought about ways we can harm ourselves.”
It is very important for students who are active to stay hydrated. Staying hydrated will help students keep focus and they will perform better in school.
