After finishing up a class assignment senior Monica Moncada would have never known that her pink- striped Doodle Jump looking character would be anything more than just a grade.
Moncada was one of two student who creations were put into a Texas Visual Arts Association (TVAA) competition. According to a GISD Communications story, there were 893 pieces at the competition and only 141 were chosen by the judges and were showcased at UTD’S Visual Arts Building.
“It was sort of like an assignment, and it turned out pretty good,” Moncada said. “[Mr. McBride] gave us a paper and it had different designs on it. We had to cut it into three pieces, trade it with someone else and make our own sculpture out of it.”
Moncada won an Outstanding Sculpture award for her Pink Fatty Stripy Canard and received a certificate, ribbon and $75.
“Going to competition wasn’t bad but making [the sculpture] was bad because I would mess up,” Moncada said. “I had to start over two times until I actually liked the way it looked.”
At competition, Moncada had to remake her design which was difficult because she was supplied with different paper.
“I did the same design, but it was harder to do because I had papier-mache,” Moncada said.
Moncada had fun and liked painting, because she had to put different colors together until she got the right colors.
“It’s pretty cool to say I got money for a project that I didn’t have to pay for,” Moncada said. “I made it myself. Having someone interested in my project was pretty cool.”
