As a teenage girl, I like to exercise my right to wear a miniskirt. I keep it at a modest length (well, as modest as a miniskirt can get) and usually wear knee- high socks, so all that’s visible is about three inches of skin, most of it being my knees. I did this twice and for the most part it went unnoticed. The third time I wore it, I was sent to the office before first period. I was livid to say the least.
So if I can’t wear my two-inch-above-the-knee miniskirt (which, despite the fact that I was sent to the office, complies with the school dress code), I think the cheerleaders should wear longer skirts. Yes, it’s true that during school they wear leggings underneath their skirts at school. But that doesn’t really matter if the skirt barely covers the intended areas. (Which I’ve seen before.) Other girls can’t wear microminis with leggings underneath, so why should any of the cheerleaders get to?
It is also true that cheerleaders are, to some extent, athletes, which requires them to wear a uniform that would not interfere with their routines. However, given the clinginess of their skirts, it seems to me that even walking proves to be a challenge.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that all of the cheerleaders’ skirts are too short and too tight, but just one is too many, especially when those of us who comply with the dress code are sent to the office and told to change. And maybe it is true that they pull them up to cover what their top doesn’t, but why not get a longer top? I know that cheer skirts are made longer, so I’m pretty sure that the tops are, too. In fact, I’m POSITIVE that they are. (See: http://gtmsportswear.com/cheerleading/products/stock-uniforms)
