Some of the Mam’selles try to hold in their giggles as the Raider Rowdies mimic their pre-game routine. I look back and I see my fellow Rowdies on the football field lined up in the middle of the two rows of sparkly-uniformed Mam’selles, the football players huddled up at the very end of our line. It gets quiet. With a single swift move of the drum majors’ hands, the band holds their instruments into position. I can feel my heart fluttering as the music starts to play, waiting for our cue to run across the field with our red and black NGHS flags.
When we get back into place on the sidelines, I know these games are an experience most people at this school will not get to have. Every week, I’ve grown to stop caring about whether or not our varsity football team wins anymore. I don’t care if everyone around me might not be feeling as much spirit as I do. I just try to have as much fun as I can while I’m still in high school.
If the lack of school spirit at the school bothers you, don’t complain. That attitude doesn’t help anything. Go to as many games as you can, and take your friends. Don’t be afraid of supporting fellow Raiders by cheering them on and just try to have fun. Positivity is contagious if you constantly spread it. Be aware of limitations some of our athletes have and don’t spread any negativity. It affects more people than you might think.
Be an example and others will soon follow. Underclassmen, you lead the way for your future senior classes’ school spirit. Don’t take it for granted. And for seniors, even though your last year of football season is almost over, it’s not too late for you. Seeing the band, cheerleaders, drill team and everything else is something all students should have a chance to experience. If you have never been to a varsity football game, go. Don’t focus on the scoreboard; focus on being there for our team. Halftime, watch the Mam’selles who worked so hard on their routines. When you’re in the stands, don’t be afraid to cheer with the cheerleaders and dance along with the band and Rowdies. Remember, our purpose is so you have a good time at the games. And don’t be afraid to support our other teams, too. Everyone focuses a lot on how varsity football does, but all of our other teams are worth our support. And whatever you do, just never forget to stay positive. You might just make lifetime memories that are worthwhile.
