We are slowly but surely reaching the most watched television event of the year, the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl is a championship game in which the winners of the National Football Conference and American Football conference go head-to-head to take home the most prestigious award in football, the Lombardi Trophy. This year it will be the Los Angeles Rams taking on Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

The Rams defeated the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Championship game 26 to 23 in overtime on a game-winning field goal kick made by Rams’ player Greg Zuerlein. Quarterback Jared Goff overcame the notoriously loud Saint’s stadium, and threw for 297 yards along with a touchdown. One key takeaway from this game is that star Running Back Todd Gurley was benched in the second half of the game, only receiving the ball once in the fourth quarter. Gurley finished the game with four carries for 10 yards and a touchdown. He has been rehabbing a knee injury from the regular season, but Head Coach Sean McVay believes Gurley will be fine for the Super Bowl.

“It was a flow for the game,” McVay told media postgame. “I thought Todd’s run from the 5 on the two-minute drive was outstanding. What personifies Todd … is this is an MVP-caliber player, and he just kept fighting. He kept supporting his teammates. He’s gonna have an instrumental role in the next game against whoever we play. Today, that was kind of just the feel for the flow of the game that we had. Not anything against Todd.”

The Rams will need Gurley to carry a heavy load against the Patriots, who gave up an average of 4.9 yards per carry during the regular season, which is ironically how many yards Gurley averaged when he ran the ball.

In the AFC Championship, The New England Patriots defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 37-31 in overtime. The Patriots received the ball in overtime and marched 75 yards down the field on 13 plays to end the game with a Rex Burkhead touchdown run. Brady did his part throwing for 348 yards and a touchdown, but he also threw two interceptions. The gamechanger for the Patriots was Running Back Sony Michel, who also happens to be the hottest player in football right now. He finished the game with 119 yards and two touchdowns, and he’s averaging 121 yards per game and has five touchdowns in the playoffs. The Patriots will try to continue this trend against a talented, but undisciplined Rams defensive front, who gave up a league worst of 5.1 yards per carry in the regular season.

My Pick: My heart tells me to pick the Rams, but my mind is saying to pick the Patriots. The Rams have had a very good season, finishing 13-3 and as the number two seed in the NFC. They finished top five in all offensive categories, including total yards per game and points scored. They also have the most impactful defensive player in the game, Aaron Donald. But, this is Tom Brady and Bill Belichick’s ninth Super Bowl appearance together, already winning five of them. The Patriots have all the experience and chemistry they will need, and they also have Tom Brady, who many believe is the greatest player of all time. This will be a great game between two teams with amazing coaches, and I’m picking the Patriots to win.
